Metaversal is bankless newsletter Weekly level-ups for NFTs, virtual worlds and collectibles
Dear country without banks
happy new year 🎉
As we look ahead, there’s no doubt that many talking heads in the crypto space, myself included, think the NFT gaming ecosystem will be big in 2023.
But what would we like to see in this ecosystem for this important year to come to fruition?
To that end, I’ve put together a wishlist — 8 rising themes in the NFT gaming sector that I (and probably you too) want to see more of in 2023. Let’s dive in!

One reason people love games so much? They allow us to test and hone our skills.
This is most true of many games. depth, that is, it offers a rich variety of tactical and strategic gameplay possibilities. Everything from chess to Hearthstone are examples here.
The NFT gaming ecosystem is growing faster than ever, but so far many of its early titles have had a lot to do and offer players little test of skill. It felt “flat” at points. One of his projects currently going in the right direction here is Axie Infinity.
April 2022, announced by Axie creator Sky Mavis Axie Infinity: Originsan optimized version of the original Tactical Card Battler game that introduced card updates, charm and rune crafting systems, and real-time combat. many You can enjoy playing with depth with your own custom-made playing style.
Of course, Axie Infinity: Origins itself is still a work in progress, but we hope to see even more projects following this lead in 2023 to “dive deep.”Especially if you want to know more about this game, its basics In this Sky Mavis guide.
A decent smartphone is more affordable than a computer or game console, so mobile gaming is great for accessibility.
One thing I’ve always really enjoyed about Axie Infinity has been the way it’s played on Android devices (iOS support coming soon). No doubt we will see more NFT games emulating this approach on mobile. Gaming activity continues to rise to new heights.
One of the projects I’m currently looking at in this area is tree bath.
Mobile MMORPG built and led on Ethereum infinite clouds When looping, Treeverse is currently in limited pre-alpha testing. But an early video of this test reveals a game setup that not only looks pretty, but also looks downright fun.
Providing applications that bring fun to more people and empower more people with cryptocurrency is the guiding principle of mobile NFT gaming. It will be very interesting to see how Treeverse and other mobile titles like it progress accordingly.
A game with many on-chain elements may involve many transactions and wallet signatures.
High volume of transactions and wallet signatures = poor user experience.
So a new NFT game that shows how to provide a gasless UX is pirate nationAn on-chain adventure game built on Polygon.the project is game wallet system This allows Pirate Nation to cover deals behind the scenes so players don’t have to pay for gas or sign deals during games.
I hope other web3 games start experimenting with this great UX approach!
Arbitrum has been the largest and most popular Layer 2 (L2) Ethereum scaling solution for some time now.
Of course, affordable and fast infrastructure is perfect for NFT games. This reality, combined with all the advancements yet to come to Arbitrum, makes this L2 a fertile ground for the web3 gaming boom.
In addition, projects such as Treasure DAO At Arbitrum, it looks like the fun is just beginning, as they’ve done a lot to provide a foundation for their already thriving NFT scene.that is literally applies to titles like beaconA free RPG that just launched with a bang and is poised to bring a good deal of activity to Arbitrum in the future. I think this is just a small part of the future for this L2.
The thrill of competition, the glory of skillful victories, the achievements and rewards earned, and a sense of belonging to a passionate community of peers. these are That’s why players find tournaments so exciting.
So when it comes to NFT games, tournaments are absolutely a great way to regularly provide players with a fun and engaging experience, and we’d love to see more tournaments accordingly.
One project that I think is currently making the tournament approach successful is Sorare: NBAallows players to build fantasy decks and enter various contests at any time. Yes, please!
If an NFT game pushes an update, game creators will have to temporarily suspend their contracts and players will have to unstake or transfer their game assets. This is not good UX.
One game currently tackling this problem is Shattered EON, to be released in April 2023.flexible and modular diamond standard A smart contract approach that allows NFT games (among other use cases) to easily extend and update their projects. I would love to see more of this pragmatic approach in space.
By “on-chain game engine” we mean a set of smart contracts created to power a game’s backend on a blockchain like Ethereum indefinitely.
On-chain game engines are interesting because they allow third-party creators to openly build new experiences around and on top of NFT games. This dynamic paves the way for modding, allowing players to actively choose how they enjoy and experience their favorite games.
A lot of interesting research has been done in this area recently. For example, in the last few months we have seen antique, latticeWhen Adam Cochrane Introduce a new on-chain game engine. These are the flowering of new fields, and the possibilities are wide open here and now.
Nearly every NFT game to date has adopted ERC20 tokens in some form or another.
The most common approaches we’ve seen so far revolve around single-token or dual-token models. The latter splits governance and utility concerns into separate ERC20s, while the former attempts to handle all needs in one token.
Both of these approaches can face major problems. His 0xKepler, in my opinion one of the great brains of web3 games, shows an excellent layout in this thread.
As a way around these problems, 0xKepler no token model It relies on “off-chain currency + NFT for value generation”.
The idea is that players will be able to “create NFTs against off-chain currencies”. NFT games can be ruined when unchecked. I think it’s an engaging approach that leads to a more fun and balanced game. I would be thrilled if more projects started to implement this strategy.
If you’re interested in NFTs and are a gamer, it’s a very exciting time to step into the NFT ecosystem.
Yes, the NFT game scene is still pretty primitive, but when you observe it here, you can quickly see that it’s turning a corner.Once upon a time there were very few simple NFT game efforts, but now many Such titles are in various stages of development and have varying levels of complexity.
Indeed, possibilities and technologies are open. Gameplay is richer, UX is better, our collective infrastructure and collective knowledge are improving in every direction. We are certainly far from solving everything in this area, but as an avid gamer and NFTer my hopes and predictions are that 2023 will continue to see significant progress in NFT game projects!
