Interpol Tackling Crime in the Metaverse

International Criminal Police Organization is serious about educating police in the virtual realm.

Interpol utilizes the Metaverse to enhance its ability to solve crimes. In fact, Interpol is using its already functioning virtual reality space to Try to solve crimes and catch criminals.

Interpol Executive Director Jürgen Stock thinks crime has never been more sophisticated. As such, agencies need to move with the times to fulfill their role.

Mr Stock said:

“We have to respond well to that. Sometimes lawmakers, the police and our society are a little behind.”

Interpol’s metaverse

Interpol now uses a secure virtual reality environment for training, collaboration and research. However, organizations now seem to be taking the Metaverse and its potential usefulness very seriously.

In fact, the environment they work in can only be accessed via a secure server, allowing police officers to simulate crime scenarios in virtual reality.

Definition of Metaverse Crime

Crime in the metaverse is problematic. Certain crimes, such as sexual harassment, for example, are very obvious in the real world. But such crimes can be more difficult to define in the virtual realm.

Dr. Madan Oberoi, Executive Director of Technology and Innovation at Interpol, recognizes these challenges. But he also believes that raising awareness about the Metaverse is one of the biggest challenges they face.

he said:

“Similarly, if law enforcement is interested in helping people injured in the metaverse, they need to know about the metaverse.

“And that’s one of our goals: to make sure that law enforcement personnel start using the Metaverse and are aware of it.

International Efforts to Fight Crime

INTERPOL is currently present in 195 countries. Moreover, cybercrime is international in nature. Therefore, INTERPOL’s role in solving cybercrime is critical.

Mr Stock continued:

“So, almost 100 years after its creation, the role of Interpol has become so important in today’s world, because no country can fight this kind of crime in isolation.”
