A Japanese NPO called Katriba recently launched Room-K, a Metaverse-based platform to help students who don’t want to attend school classes.

The pandemic has increased online education (e-learning) using platforms such as Zoom and Google Classroom. But these are not the only platforms used for education. Organizations are now using Web3 technology to deliver immersive classes.

One of these organizations is a Japanese non-profit organization. Catriba.

Japanese student depression problem

Before we look at how Katriba uses the Metaverse to help students, let’s first look at why this is big news. In Japan, the impact of the pandemic has led to a significant drop in school enrollment and an increase in students experiencing depression and other emotional problems.

Almost a year after the initial COVID-19 outbreak, a series of surveys were conducted by the Japanese government to assess the physical and mental health status of Japanese children.

  • 15% of elementary school students
  • 24% of junior high school students
  • 30% of high school students

Some of the concerns were fueled by the outbreak, but much of it was rooted in a time of lack of social interaction, stress from increased workloads, and disruption.

Katriba is a Japanese non-profit organization (NPO) aiming to upgrade current e-learning platforms using Metaverse-based technology.

Seeing the need for better support, Katriva launched Room-K to help students build trust with their mentors, give them a sense of belonging, and better prepare them for their future lives.

Room-K allows students to connect with teachers and peers in a safe, private and most importantly convenient virtual environment.

The platform could see a significant increase in popularity after new policy updates from government agencies on child and family issues in the country. We are looking for ways to implement a learning process that

How does Room-K work?

So how does Room-K work? Is it just a glorification of a Zoom call? No, it’s not.

Students can attend classes and study at their own pace by attending 45-minute sessions at their own convenience. You can study various topics with other students, from Japanese to programming.

Is Room-K only intended to facilitate homeschooling socially anxious children? By providing a controlled environment, the platform aims to teach children to interact with peers and adults, an essential skill in today’s world.

Does Room-K Really Work?

This idea may sound great in theory. The biggest question, though, is whether it actually works. According to the bulletin, the students welcomed Room-K positively.

Since its opening, 110 elementary and junior high school students nationwide have enrolled in Room-K. About 10% of students are now back in regular school and the rest are still using Room-K.

Katriba’s Room-K helps students overcome their fear of going to school by offering a unique way to learn. Connecting regularly with a mentor helped them regain confidence and reduce stress.
